Ensure a safe and effective recruitment process

Criminality and right to work background checks

Right to work and criminality background checks are key to a safe and effective recruitment process. They help you make the best hiring decisions for your business.

But there’s no doubt that identity checking, though necessary, is cumbersome. In-person identity checks and verifying physical documents takes up valuable time.

The UK’s digital identity and attributes trust framework has recently updated legislation around digital ID checking. Certified providers, like Zellis, can now offer a faster and more convenient background checking service.

Let us take the weight off your mind.

What are right to work and criminality background checks?

Criminality checks

Criminality checks look at someone’s criminal history. In the UK, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) carries out the checks. There are four types:

Basic checks include unspent convictions and cautions from the National Police Computer. Can be used for any position.

Standard checks are for positions included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This includes working in a prison, court officers, or Security Industry Authority licenses.

Enhanced checks are for positions included in both the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Police Act 1977. Includes some social care services, applying for grants, or being solely in charge of children.

Enhanced checks with barred list search the same information as an Enhanced check, but also search children’s or adult’s barred lists.

DBS checks are a requirement for certain roles, including working with children or vulnerable adults. They’re also required for working in settings such as hospitals, prisons, care homes, and schools.

Right to work checks

Right to work checks ensure candidates are who they say they are. That includes their legal right to work in the UK. Employing someone who doesn’t have the right to work here can result in fines of up to £20K per illegal worker. That’s why we recommend prioritising right to work checks in your hiring process.

The benefits of digital ID checks

Right to work and criminality checks depend on accurate ID checks. But manual ID checks are cumbersome and hold up the recruitment process. It’s frustrating for you and gives candidates a negative first impression. For safer and smarter recruiting, look no further.
